The Football League Second Division 1972/73 was the 70th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 12, 1972 and ended on May 9, 1973.

Second division champions were Burnley FC and the second-placed Queens Park Rangers also rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1973/74, the two first division clubs Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion, ranked in the table below, took the places. Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the two clubs, the third division winner Bolton Wanderers and the third division champions Notts County took the vacant positions in the following season 1973/74 .
