^ Football League First Division 1898/99
The Football League Second Division 1898/99 was the seventh season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . Second division champions were Manchester City and in addition to the "Citizens", the second-placed Glossop North End rose to the Football League First Division .
For the first time the automatic promotion and relegation rule intervened between the first and second English leagues and so the two first division teams Bolton Wanderers and The Wednesday, ranked in the table below, took the places for the two promoted in the following second division season 1899/1900 . FC Blackpool and FC Darwen had to relegate from the Second Division . In addition, Loughborough FC feared to remain in the class, but then received enough votes in the re-election process of the league association to be allowed to participate again in the Second Division in the following season 1899/1900. The places of Blackpool and Darwen took the newly promoted Chesterfield FC and Middlesbrough FC .
