The Football League Second Division 1938/39 was the 43rd season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league and at the same time the last season before the outbreak of the Second World War , which resulted in an interruption of official play until the resumption in the 1946/47 season pulled. It began on August 27, 1938 and ended on May 6, 1939.

Second division champions were the Blackburn Rovers and also rose to second-placed Sheffield United in the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1946/47, the two first division clubs Birmingham City (formerly "FC Birmingham") and Leicester City, ranked in the table below, took their places. Norwich City and the Tranmere Rovers had to relegate from the Second Division , with Tranmere now having to compete in the North Season Football League Third Division North and Norwich in the Football League Third Division South . Instead of the two clubs took the free positions in the following season 1939/40 Third Division North champions FC Barnsley and from the Third Division South the winner Newport County .
