Football League First Division 1937/38

The Football League First Division 1938/39 was the 47th season of the highest English football league and at the same time the last full season before the outbreak of World War II , which resulted in an interruption of the official game operations until the resumption in the 1946/47 season . It began on August 27, 1938 and ended on May 6, 1939.

The Everton won with four points ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers its now fifth English championship. Both newly promoted Aston Villa and Manchester United were able to keep the class; instead, Birmingham FC and Leicester City had to move into the Second Division . These two clubs were to be replaced in the 1946/47 season by the two second division promoted Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United .

A total of 531 players were used, with Aston Villa and Preston North End with 20 the fewest and FC Birmingham with 32 the most players in league games. 122 newcomers opposed 328 footballers who last came into play in the 1938/39 season. 25 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

The championship team of Everton FC

The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Everton during the 1938/39 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of appearances and the goals scored are given in brackets, lastly the number of all first division games up to that point. The players of Everton FC had played a total of 2,416 top division games at the end of the season.
