Football League First Division 1970/71

The Football League First Division 1971/72 was the 73rd season of the highest English football league . It began on August 14, 1971 and ended on May 11, 1972.

On the last day of the match, third-placed Derby County defeated leaders Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a goal from John McGovern, securing the English championship for the first time in its history, one point ahead of pursuers Leeds United , Liverpool FC and Manchester City . Both newly promoted Sheffield United and Leicester City were able to hold the class; instead, Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town had to go to the Second Division . These two clubs should be replaced in the following season by the two second division promoted Birmingham City and Norwich City .

A total of 473 players were used, with Derby County with 16 the fewest and Newcastle United with 27 the most players in league games. 87 newcomers faced 81 footballers who last came into play in the 1971/72 season. 37 players were able to play all of their club's 42 league games.

    The Derby County's championship team

The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Derby County during the 1971/72 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
