Anthony David "Tony" Bailey (born September 23, 1946 in Burton-upon-Trent ) is a former English football player . As a central defender , he was part of the 1972 championship team of Derby County , but remained with the exception of a league use behind players like Terry Hennessey , Roy McFarland and Colin Todd only substitute.

Athletic career

Bailey's football career began in June 1966 at his home club Burton Albion , which had just been promoted to the top division of the Southern League . There he began to establish himself as a young central defender in a team that was constantly worried about staying up in the semi-professional league. During the relegation season 1969/70, which should end in last place, Bailey left the club in February 1970 in the direction of the reigning second division champions and first division club Derby County .

His signing for just £ 2,500 went almost unnoticed by the public as coach Brian Clough also bought Terry Hennessey for £ 100,000 on the same day . From then on, the sporting perspective was limited to the reserve team, because the defense center was already top-class with Dave Mackay and Roy McFarland ; this was joined by the mentioned Welsh international Hennessey. Additional competition grew up in February 1971 with Colin Todd , who also played in Bailey's preferred position and cost £ 170,000. He received his probation on December 27, 1971 and the opponent was title favorite Leeds United . In the 3-0 defeat, Bailey found it very difficult. He received a warning after a foul on Mick Jones and his debut was not followed by another league appearance in the first team. He had not qualified for the official receipt of a championship medal for the 1972 league title . He got his sense of achievement in the reserve team, with which he won the Central League in the 1971/72 season . He also played in the Texaco Cup, which is not very important in sporting terms - in the second leg of the first round against Dundee United (after a 6-2 win), a substitution for Hennessey against Stoke City (3-2) and a starting eleven in the semi-final second leg against Newcastle United (3-2 after extra time).

In January 1974 Derby County loaned him to third division club Oldham Athletic and when this proved itself there, the two parties agreed in March 1974 on a transfer deal. Bailey helped his new team advance to the second division in 1974. But even in Oldham he did not find his lasting happiness and in December 1974 he moved on to Bury FC, also active in the Third Division . In Bury, Bailey spent the remainder of his time as a professional footballer; he came to the end of the 1970s on 131 league appearances. From November 1980 he let his career with AFC Mossley end in the Northern Premier League .
