Texaco Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Texaco Cup was a football cup competition for British and Irish football clubs that had not qualified for a European competition. The US oil company Texaco , which was very active on the British market at the time , acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament.

In the first two seasons from 1970 to 1972, attendance was comparable to that of the “big” European club competitions, the European Champion Clubs ' Cup , the European Cup Winners' Cup and the Trade Fair Cup (from 1971: UEFA Cup ). The Anglo-Scottish duels in particular were prestigious. From 1973, however, English football dominated this competition more clearly and purely English games became more and more the rule. These were viewed by the audience as less attractive, which was expressed in lower audience acceptance. The Irish clubs no longer took part in the original tournament from 1973 due to increasing political tensions and founded a separate competition, which was also held under the patronage of Texaco and was also called the "Texaco Cup".

With the withdrawal of sponsors Texaco in 1975, both competitions ended. The Anglo-Scottish Cup was the successor and was the scene of further Scottish-English games until 1981.
