Anglo-Scottish Cup

The Anglo-Scottish Cup was a 1975 been transferred to 1981 football - cup competition for football clubs in the Scottish and English professional league system. It was created when the sponsor withdrew from the Texaco Cup . After the Scottish clubs withdrew in 1981, the competition was held twice as the Football League Group Cup only for English clubs in 1982 and 1983 , making it the predecessor of the Football League Trophy competition that was created in 1983/84 .

The competition was open to the best clubs that did not qualify for the European Cup. The eight Scottish participants played four participants out of the quarter-finals in a knockout round with a round trip, the 16 English participants first played a quarter-finalist in four groups of four in a simple round-robin tournament mode . A special feature was the rule that in a few years there was a bonus point for the teams that scored three goals in a game in addition to the two-point rule that was common at the time .

From the quarter-finals, the competition was held in the cup system with two matches each (home and away game); in the quarterfinals there was always a representative of the English and Scottish leagues facing each other.

The competition was dominated by the English clubs, in six events only a representative of Scotland managed to get into the finals; In 1978 FC St. Mirren lost the final against Bristol City , and two years later the same club was the only Scottish club to win the cup.

While in the beginning the best non-European Cup clubs in England took part in the competition, over time mainly lower-class professional clubs registered, so that spectator interest continued to decline in Scotland and Scotland withdrew from the competition in 1981.

In 1987/88 there was an attempt to revive the competition as a play-off between the winners of the FA Cup and Scottish Cup , but due to a lack of support for the first leg at Coventry City (1: 1), the second leg scheduled for May 1988 at FC St Mirren no longer whistled.
