The Anglo-Scottish Cup was played for the 5th time in 1979/80 . The tournament for football club teams from England and Scotland was considered the successor to the Texaco Cup . The cup was played among a total of 24 participants. 16 clubs were subordinate to the English federation , as well as eight clubs of the Scottish FA . It began on July 28, 1979 and ended with the final second leg on April 16, 1980 at Love Street in Paisley . Burnley FC started as defending champions in the competition, which won against Oldham Athletic in the previous year's final . In this year's final, FC St. Mirren from Scotland and Bristol City from England met each other. Both clubs faced each other in the 1978 final. At that time, Bristol won 3-2 on both legs. The FC St. Mirren was able to prevail in the final this year with an overall result of 5: 1.
