The Anglo-Scottish Cup was played for the 6th and last time in 1980/81 . The tournament for football club teams from England and Scotland was considered the successor to the Texaco Cup . The cup was played among a total of 24 participants. 16 clubs were subordinate to the English federation , as well as eight clubs of the Scottish FA . It began on July 16, 1980 and ended with the final second leg on March 31, 1981 at Meadow Lane in Nottingham . As the defending champion, FC St. Mirren started the competition, which won against Bristol City in the previous year's final . In this year's final, the two English clubs Chesterfield FC and Notts County met . Chesterfield was able to prevail this year in the final with an overall result of 2: 1. There was an extension of the second leg .

The Scottish Association withdrew from the competition in 1981. The short-lived Football League Group Cup emerged as a follow-up competition for English clubs .
