The Texaco Cup was played for the fifth and last time in 1974/75 . The American mineral oil company Texaco acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament . The tournament for football club teams from England and Scotland was played among a total of 20 participants. 16 clubs were subordinate to the English and four to the Scottish federation . It began on August 3, 1974 and ended with the final second leg on December 11, 1974 at St. James' Park in Newcastle upon Tyne . The two English clubs Newcastle United and Southampton FC met in the final . Newcastle won the final 3-1 on a round trip and won the Texaco Cup for the second time after 1973/74 .

With the withdrawal of the sponsor Texaco in 1975, the competition ended. The Anglo-Scottish Cup was the successor and was the scene of further Scottish-English games until 1981.
