The Texaco Cup was played for the second time in 1971/72 . The American mineral oil company Texaco acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament . The tournament for football club teams from England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland was played among a total of 16 participants. Of these, 6 clubs were subordinate to the English and Scottish federations , as well as two clubs each from the Irish and Northern Irish federations . It began on September 14, 1971 and ended with the final second leg on April 26, 1972 at the Baseball Ground in Derby . In the final game met Derby County from England and the Airdrieonians FC each other from Scotland. Derby won the final 2-1 on a two-way leg.

The Irish and Northern Irish clubs took part for the last time and continued to play independently in the Irish Texaco Cup from the 1972/73 season onwards .
