Player career

Derby County

Colin Boulton moved to the English second division club Derby County in August 1964 and played his first six second division games in the 1964/65 season. After he remained without a league game in the 1965/66 season, he was used in fourteen games in 66/67. Derby completed these years in the lower third of the table in the Second Division. It was only with the arrival of the new coach Brian Clough and assistant coach Peter Taylor at the beginning of the 1967/68 season that the most successful period in the club's history began. Colin Boulton, meanwhile, remained behind the newly signed Les Green only the role of the goalkeeper. In the Second Division 1968/69 Derby managed to return to the First Division after 16 years. The start in the top English division began very successfully in the 1969/70 season with fourth place. After a ninth place in 1970/71 Derby County won the first league title in the club's history in 1971/72 . Colin Boulton had already replaced Les Green in goal in the second half of the previous season and played all 42 league games in the championship season. In the 1972/73 season County could not repeat this success with 7th place, but the team around Ron Webster , Archie Gemmill , Alan Hinton , Roy McFarland and Boulton managed to move into the semifinals of the European Cup in 1972/73 . After u. a. In the second round Benfica Lisbon could be defeated, the Italian champions Juventus Turin waited in the semi-finals . After a 1: 3 defeat in Turin, Derby was eliminated from the competition after a 0: 0 at home and thus missed the final against Ajax Amsterdam .

At the beginning of the 1973/74 season , the board separated from coach Brian Clough under turbulent circumstances and hired the former player Dave Mackay as his successor. Mackay reached a third place with County 1974 and led the team in the Football League First Division 1974/75 to the second championship in the club's history. Colin Boulton played again all 42 league games and thus contributed his part to the title before Liverpool FC . The second start in the 1975/76 European Cup ended in the second round. Derby failed after two legendary games 4: 1 and 1: 5 after extra time against Spanish champions Real Madrid . The performance in the league deteriorated significantly after a fourth place in 1975/76 in the two following years. 1978 Boulton Derby left after fourteen successful years and moved to the North American Soccer League . After returning to England, he played four league games for the fourth division Lincoln City in the 1980/81 season .

In December 2009 Colin Boulton was elected to the Derby County's All Star Team.
