Alan Thomas Hinton (born October 6, 1942 in Wednesbury ( Sandwell )) is a retired English football player and coach . His most successful time as a player he spent with Derby County , with whom he won the English championship in 1972 and 1975 .
Player career
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest
Alan Hinton started his playing career with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Football League First Division 1961/62 . In his second season, 1962/63 , he became the top scorer in his team with 19 goals. In January 1964 Johnny Carey signed him for Nottingham Forest . The most successful season in Nottingham reached Hinton with his team in the Football League First Division 1966/67 , when Forest won the runner-up behind Manchester United .
Derby County
Despite this success, he moved to the second division Derby County in September 1967 . There Brian Clough took over the coaching position and set himself the goal of making Derby the best team in England. After promotion to the first division in 1968/69, the newcomer finished fourth in the Football League First Division in 1969/70 . The team played even more successfully in the 1971/72 season , when County won the first championship title in the club's history. Hinton scored 15 goals in 38 league games that season and was his team's top scorer. With the championship title, Derby took part in the European Cup in 1972/73 and only failed in the semifinals at the Italian champions Juventus Turin . In the 1974/75 season , County achieved the second championship title under new coach Dave Mackay . Alan Hinton ended his playing career in England after this success and spent two seasons in the USA, where he later also worked as a coach.
National team
Alan Hinton made his debut for the English national team on October 3, 1962 against France in qualifying for the 1964 European Football Championship . He celebrated his first international goal in the second game on October 21, 1964 in a 2-2 win against Belgium. His third and last international match took place on November 18, 1964 against Wales.
