The Texaco Cup was played for the fourth time in 1973/74 . The American mineral oil company Texaco acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament . The tournament for football club teams from England and Scotland was played among a total of 16 participants. Nine clubs were subordinate to the English and seven to the Scottish federation . It began on September 18, 1973 and ended with the final on April 24, 1974 at St. James' Park in Newcastle upon Tyne . The two English clubs Newcastle United and Burnley FC met in the final . Newcastle won the final 2-1 after extra time.
