Frank Clark (born September 9, 1943 in Consett , England ) is a former English football player and coach , who was best known for his time at Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest . He has been Chairman of the Board of Nottingham Forest since October 2011.

Player career

Newcastle United

After a brief stint at the lower class club Crook Town , Frank Clark moved to the English second division club Newcastle United in 1962 . In the 1964/65 season he succeeded with his team as first in the table of promotion to the First Division . Two years later, Clark and his team had to tremble for a long time to avoid relegation in the Football League First Division 1966/67 , which was ultimately narrowly mastered. The best league placement to date was achieved in the 1969/70 season by a seventh place in the table. Frank Clark spent the following years with his club in the no man's land of the table. 1975 took place after 13 years in Newcastle, the change to the second division Nottingham Forest .

Nottingham Forest

Brian Clough had just taken over the coaching position at Forest and should turn the previously insignificant club into a top international team in the coming years. Before the start of the 1976/77 season, Clough got support from Peter Taylor , who took over the position as assistant coach. The two had already together u. a. Derby County led to the championship in the 1971–72 season . At the end of the season he was promoted to the First Division and in the Football League First Division 1977/78 his team achieved the sensation of winning the championship as a promoted player before Liverpool FC . The following season was also very successful and finished with 2nd place in the Football League First Division 1978/79 and winning the National Champion Cup in 1979 . In the final, the Swedish champions Malmö FF were defeated 1-0 in Munich . Trevor Francis scored the winning goal . A year later, the title was defended in the National Champion Cup in 1980 with a 1-0 win against the German champions Hamburger SV . Other titles in these years were two successes in the League Cup and a success in the European Supercup 1979 against FC Barcelona .

Coaching career

Leyton Orient

After Frank Clark initially worked as an assistant coach, he took over the coaching position at the English third division club Leyton Orient in 1982 . In the 1984/85 season he rose with his club as third from bottom in the fourth division. Four years later he and his team were promoted to the third division. In the next three years Frank Clark Leyton Orient established in the third division before he ended his coaching work at Leyton in 1992.

Nottingham Forest

For the 1993/94 season he returned to his former club Nottingham Forest . Forest had just been relegated to the second division under the coaching legend Brian Clough and this had led to the end of the coaching activity of Clough after 18 years in Nottingham . Clark's debut was an excellent one and led straight back to the Premier League, which was introduced in 1992 . There the team reached a very good third place in the Premier League 1994/95 . The key player at the time was Stan Collymore, whom Clark bought from Southend United in 1993. He scored 19 goals in 27 games in the promotion season and became the team's top scorer again a year later with 22 goals in 37 league games. After the season, however, Clark sold him to Liverpool for the record transfer fee of £ 8,500,000 . Other key players from Forest were Stuart Pearce , Bryan Roy , Steve Stone and Steve Chettle . Nottingham achieved another success in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup by reaching the quarter-finals. There, however, the team clearly failed because of the eventual winner FC Bayern Munich .

The season in the Premier League 1996/97 should be a bitter one for the fans. As the bottom of the table with only 6 wins in 38 games, the team rose again to the second division. Bryan Roy switched to Hertha BSC during the season, and Dean Saunders from Galatasaray Istanbul , who was signed as a replacement, could not prove to be the hoped-for reinforcement. Coach Frank Clark was replaced by Stuart Pearce after a 2-4 defeat on Matchday 17 at Liverpool FC . Forest only recorded one win of the season at this point, and this was also achieved on the first match day.

Manchester City

Only a short time later, Clark took over the coaching position at the English second division club Manchester City , who had been relegated from the Premiere League the previous year. However, the team clearly missed promotion even under him. In the following season, the traditional club crashed completely due to its first relegation to the third division. Frank Clark was dismissed from the board in mid-February 1998 and did not take up any new trainer work afterwards.
