Stephen "Steve" Chettle (born September 27, 1968 in Nottingham , England ) is a former English football player , who was best known for his time at Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest

Steve Chettle started his professional career in 1986 with his hometown club Nottingham Forest . The club was coached during this time by legendary coach Brian Clough , who led Nottingham to the championship title in the First Division in 1978 as a climber and to winning the national championship cup in 1979 and 1980.

When Chettle started with Forest's first team at the age of 18, that very successful time was already 6 years ago. He was also unlucky to start his career a year after the Heysel disaster , as a result of which all English clubs were excluded from international competition for 5 years. Nottingham Forest was therefore unable to start in the UEFA Cup despite two third places in the 1987/88 and 1988/89 seasons . After Chettle and his team had failed in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Liverpool in 1988 , he met the team from Liverpool again in the semi-finals in the 1988/89 season . The game took place as usual in this round on a neutral pitch and, as in the previous year, in Hillsborough Stadium . The game on April 15, 1989 would go down in football history as the Hillsborough disaster in an inglorious way. The abandoned game was rescheduled on May 7th in Manchester and Liverpool FC won 3-1.

In the league it was enough in the next three years only to placements in the middle of the table, but succeeded in 1991 the first entry into the final of the FA Cup since 1959. In the final on May 18, 1991 in front of 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium , Forest lost However, despite an early 1: 0 lead by Stuart Pearce with 1: 2 against Tottenham Hotspur to Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker . In the first season after the introduction of the Premier League , Steve Chettle and his team had to go bitterly into the second division. Forest had not been able to adequately replace the departures of Steve Hodge , Des Walker and Teddy Sheringham and also suffered from the increasing alcohol addiction of coach Brian Clough, who ended his coaching activity after 18 years at Nottingham Forest. After the direct resurgence Forest reached in the Premier League 1994/95 the third place in the table and thus moved into the UEFA Cup 1995/96 . There the team around Steve Chettle failed only in the quarter-finals at Bayern Munich . In the 1996/97 season, the next relegation to the second division and after another direct return, the first direct relegation in the 1998/99 season. Chettle left his club after 13 years and moved to Barnsley FC .

Barnsley FC

After a short loan deal, Barnsley FC signed Steve Chettle in 1999 on a firm contract basis. Barnsley was active at the time in the Football League First Division and thus in the second division. In the 1999/2000 season he reached fourth place in the table with his team, but missed promotion to the Premier League in the play-offs. The following year it was only enough to a 16th place in the table and after the team relegated in the 2001/02 season as penultimate in the English third division, Chettle left Barnsley and moved to Walsall FC .

Grimsby Town

Steve Chettle stayed with his club change of the First Division, but rose with his new club Grimsby Town 2002/03 also from the third division and then moved to Burton Albion .

Burton Albion

Burton Albion was only active in the amateur field in 2003/04, but was coached by Chettles former teammate Nigel Clough , who convinced him to move. After another year in the amateur field at Ilkeston Town , Steve Chettle ended his career in 2005 at the age of 36 and then took care of his own football school in Nottingham.
