Nigel Howard Clough (born March 19, 1966 in Sunderland ) is a former English national football player and today's coach. He played mainly as a striker but could also play in other positions. Since December 2015 he has been coaching the English third division club Burton Albion .

Player career

1984-1993: Nottingham Forest

Clough came to Forest in 1982 at the age of 16, but then played mainly for Heanor Town, a lower-class club, as he was not good enough for Nottingham's first team. That changed towards the end of the decade, when he became a regular player and crowd favorite in Nottingham. He made his breakthrough in the 1985/86 season when he scored 15 league goals and was the top scorer of his team. He celebrated his best scoring in the 1987/88 season with 19 league goals in 34 games. In 1989 Clough experienced the Hillsborough disaster in the FA Cup semifinals against Liverpool FC and was eliminated after the replay as in the previous year in the last round before the final. In 1990 and 1991, trained by his father Brian Clough , he had a large share of the double win of the League Cup with his goals , so he scored 2 goals in the 1989 final in a 3-1 win against Luton Town . In 1991 he lost the FA Cup final with Forest and in 1992 the League Cup final.

1993-1996: Liverpool

In 1993, Nigel Clough moved to the other Reds , Liverpool FC, for the equivalent of around four million euros . In the three years of his stay on the Mersey, however, he was never able to establish himself as a regular, which was mainly due to the world-class strikers Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler , who were the undisputed regular strikers. So he came to only 39 missions (seven goals). He made his only memorable appearance in a 3-3 draw against north-west rivals Manchester United, with his second goal being made known by Martin Taylor's comment, "It's Nigel Clough again!"

When Stan Collymore , a storm competitor, was committed, Clough decided to leave the club.

1996-1998: Manchester City

In the hope of a regular place, Clough went to Manchester City in January 1996 , but rose immediately with his new club in the second division and was loaned out in 1996/97. In the following season he completed a few games, but was relegated again. Instead of playing in the future in the third division, he moved to Burton Albion on a free transfer.

1996–1997: Return to Forest (loan)

Since he was not part of the permanent staff at City, he was loaned to his old club Nottingham Forest in 1996 , where he managed a hit in 13 games. At the end of the season, Nottingham was relegated from the Premier League .

Overall, Clough scored 103 goals in 330 games for Nottingham, making him the Reds' second-best goalscorer of all time .

English national team

Between 1986 and 1988 Clough completed 15 games for England's U21 national team, scoring three goals.

In addition, he played three so-called B internationals in 1990 and 1991, which were organized by the FA , but were not counted as full internationals.

Clough made his debut for England in a friendly on May 23, 1989 against Chile (0-0). After that, however, Bobby Robson no longer put him up for the Three Lions , only his successor Graham Taylor put him up again after more than two years against Argentina . From then on he was used more regularly, but only played three competitive games, all in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup and played his last game on June 19, 1993 against Germany . He was part of the English squad at the European Championships in 1992 , but remained without use. He did not manage to score a goal in the senior national team.

Coaching career

Player coach at Burton Albion

In October 1998, Nigel Clough went as a player-coach to Burton Albion, a club that played in the Premier Division of the Southern League , the then sixth division. In his first season, Burton was 3rd, then 13th and twice in a row 2. Then the Brewers moved to the Northern Premier League (6th division), which they promptly finished first and thus rose to the Football Conference (5th division) . There they had to fight relegation for the first three seasons before they were only 9th, then 6th and 5th in 2007/08 - the best end-of-season placement in the club's history.

On January 8, 2006, Burton Albion played 0-0 in the FA Cup against Manchester United , but then lost the replay away, however, clearly 5-0.

Although already over 42 years old, Clough still had a valid player pass for the Football Conference and also played regularly in midfield.

For a small club like Burton, Clough had a relatively large number of employees and supporters. This included two assistant coaches , a goalkeeping coach, a scout , two club doctors and a physiotherapist .

Derby County

On January 5, 2009, the second division Derby County officially announced its interest in signing Nigel Clough as the successor to Paul Jewell . The following day the club, which father Brian had already looked after, announced the engagement of the new head coach.

After a false start in the Football League Championship 2013-14 , Clough was fired on September 28, 2013.

Sheffield United

Just under a month after his release in Derby, Clough was presented on October 23, 2013 as the new coach of third division Sheffield United . In the Football League One 2013/14 , he and his team just missed the play-offs as a table seventh. The club acted more successfully in the FA Cup 2013/14 , where the third division only failed in the semifinals with 3: 5 to Hull City . After Clough missed promotion to the second division again with United in Football League One 2014/15 (play-off against Swindon Town ), the club announced the separation from Clough on May 25, 2015.

Burton Albion

On December 7, 2015, Nigel Clough returned to Burton Albion after nearly seven years as a coach . At the leaders of the Football League One 2015/16 he succeeded Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink , who had moved to the second division side Queens Park Rangers . With the league newcomer, he reached the unexpected promotion to the second division as second in the table. The club from Burton-upon-Trent , second-rate for the first time in its club's history, secured relegation in the EFL Championship 2016/17 as twentieth in the table.
