← FA Cup 1989/90 |
The FA Cup 1990/91 was the 110th edition of the competition. The defending champions were Manchester United , who had defeated Crystal Palace the previous year . Nottingham Forest had won the FA Cup for the last time in 1959, the Tottenham Hotspur won the coveted cup last 1982 in the final against the Queens Park Rangers .
All teams in the first and second English leagues only enter the competition from the third round. This is followed by an elimination game per round. If this game ends in a draw after regular playing time, a replay takes place in which home rights are exchanged. If there is another tie, another game is required.
The team from Nottingham Forest was therefore forced to play three games against Crystal Palace in the 3rd round before reaching the 4th round.
The two semi-finals will take place on neutral ground, the game between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United was played at Villa Park and the game between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal FC at Wembley Stadium .
The final took place on May 18, 1991 at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 spectators. The Nottingham Forest side took the lead early on from a free-kick from Stuart Pearce . The free kick was preceded by a foul by Paul Gascoigne who injured himself so badly that he had to be substituted after the free kick was taken. Gascoigne tore a cruciate ligament and even missed the 1992 European Football Championship due to this injury . The English international striker Gary Lineker failed in the first half when he committed a penalty to goalkeeper Mark Crossley . Tottenham equalized in the second half through Paul Stewart, before a Des Walker own goal in extra time brought the decision for Tottenham Hotspur.
