final

Champion and FA Cup winner 1888/89: Preston North End FC

The final took place on the afternoon of March 30, 1889 at The Oval cricket stadium in the London borough of Kennington in front of a crowd of more than 27,000. It was the most popular FA Cup final to date. Major Francis Marindin , 50 , who had served as President of the FA since 1874, refereed the match between Preston North End FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC . Preston North End FC had already caused a sensation in the FA Cup a year earlier when they clinched their highest FA Cup victory to date with 26-0 goals against Hyde FC . In the subsequent first participation in the finals, however, he surprisingly had to admit defeat with 1: 2 goals to West Bromwich Albion FC . Things went far better for Preston North End FC in the first season of the Football League , which he not only won and thus became the first football champion in world history, but also remained unbeaten in all 22 games, which his mostly Scottish players dubbed The Invincibles , in German the invincible brought in. For Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, who finished the first season of the Football League in third place, it was their first appearance in the final. In contrast to Preston North End FC were in the squad of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC only English players.

By winning the FA Cup, Preston North End FC became, on the one hand, the first double winners in world history and, on the other hand, they managed the unique feat of remaining unbeaten in all competitions in one season. He is also next to the Wanderers FC in the seasons 1871/72 and 1872/73, and the Bury FC in the 1902/03 season, one of three clubs that have won the FA Cup without conceding a single goal.
