Accrington is a city in the county of Lancashire in north-west England in the United Kingdom . It belongs to the Borough of Hyndburn and had 31,456 inhabitants in 2011. Accrington is 4 miles east of Blackburn , 6 miles west of Burnley , 13 miles east of Preston and 20 miles north of Manchester city center . The industrial city is a former center of the cotton and textile machine industry.
Accrington is known for producing the hardest and densest bricks in the world ( The Accrington NORI ), which were used, among other things, for the substructure of the Empire State Building , for the football club Accrington Stanley FC and the Haworth Art Gallery , which has the largest collection of Tiffany -Glass art houses in Europe.
