mode

The FA Cup was played in rounds. Any team that had a certain level of performance and had an appropriate playing field could take part. The pairings for each round were drawn in an open draw without a seeding list. The team drawn first had home rights. If the game ended in a draw, a second leg was played on the other team's pitch. If the second leg also ended in a draw, the game went into extra time or into a penalty shoot-out. This mode was valid until the fourth main round. From the fifth main round, there was only one game that was decided by extra time and penalty shoot-outs.

Some teams were exempt from certain rounds:

  • In the second qualifying round, the teams of the National League North / South (6th division of the English league) were added.
  • In the fourth qualifying round, the teams of the National League (5th division of the English league) were added.
  • In the first main round, the teams of League 1 and 2 of the Football League (3rd and 4th division of the English league) were added.
  • In the third main round on the first weekend in January, the teams of the Football League Championship (2nd division of the English league) and the Premier League (1st division of the English division) were added.

The semi-finals took place in a neutral place, the final in Wembley Stadium.

Each winner received a bonus from the television money, which was staggered according to rounds.
