Mikel Amatriain Arteta (born March 26, 1982 in San Sebastián ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach. He has been the head coach of Arsenal FC since December 22, 2019 .

Career

society

Arteta comes from the youth of FC Barcelona . As a 15-year-old, he played for the club's second team, but could never recommend himself for the first team. Therefore, he was given on loan to Paris Saint-Germain in January 2001 , where he played alongside Ronaldinho , among others .

After the loan business ended, he moved to Scotland in the summer of 2002 for the Glasgow Rangers , with whom he won the Scottish Cup and the League Cup in addition to the title in the Scottish Premier League . Although he quickly gained a regular place in the first season, injuries and loss of form slowed him down in the second year.

Therefore, he returned to Spain in 2004 and replaced Xabi Alonso, who had migrated to Liverpool FC, at Real Sociedad . However, since he could not prevail, he was loaned to Everton FC in January 2005 . After a successful season with the club, in which the qualifying games for the UEFA Champions League were reached, he was signed permanently in the summer. In the summer of 2006 and the following year, Arteta was named Player of the Year by supporters of Everton . In June 2007 he signed a new contract dated until 2012.

On August 31, 2011, Arsenal FC signed Arteta. He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2015 and was shirt number 8. For the 2014/15 season Arteta took over the captaincy of Thomas Vermaelen, who had switched to FC Barcelona . Arteta played 150 competitive games for the club in 5 years, contributed 16 goals and eleven assists and won the FA Cup and the English Supercup twice with him . At the age of 34, he ended his active career in spring 2016.

National team

Arteta has played 42 games and scored seven goals for Spanish youth national teams.

Coaching career

For the 2016/17 season , the Spaniard was hired as assistant to the new head coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City . On matchday 1 of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League , Arteta replaced the suspended Guardiola in their 2-1 defeat by Olympique Lyon on the line.

On December 22, 2019, Arteta took over Arsenal , which was 11th with 23 points after the 18th matchday of the 2019/20 season, as head coach. He succeeded the interim coach Freddie Ljungberg , who in turn had looked after the team in 6 competitive games after the separation from Unai Emery and became Arteta's assistant coach alongside Albert Stuivenberg and Steve Round .
