David Luiz Moreira Marinho (born April 22, 1987 in Diadema ) is a Brazilian soccer player . He is under contract with Arsenal FC . His preferred position is that of the central defender , where he was mainly used in the defensive midfield under coach José Mourinho .

Career

David Luiz began his career in 2005 with the northeast Brazilian club EC Vitória . In his first season he won the Bahia State Championship . In early 2007, he was initially loaned for six months from the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon , replacing Ricardo Rocha . Before the 2007/08 season, Benfica finally signed the defensive talent and David Luiz signed a contract until 2013. With Benfica, the defensive player won the Taça da Liga , the national league cup, in 2009 : After being called up in the starting line-up, the team finally sat down on penalties against Sporting Lisbon through, whereby the defender was able to convert his penalty. The title was defended the following year. In the 3-0 final win against FC Porto , David Luiz played for the full 90 minutes.

On January 31, 2011, David Luiz moved to Chelsea for around £ 20 million . He made his debut for his new club on February 6, 2011 in the 1-0 home defeat of Chelsea FC by Liverpool FC over 17 minutes after being substituted on for José Bosingwa by coach Carlo Ancelotti in the 73rd minute . Then Luiz came to regular appearances in the league.

On May 19, 2012 Luiz celebrated the greatest triumph with Chelsea when he won the UEFA Champions League in Munich against FC Bayern Munich . He played alongside Gary Cahill in central defense and had Franck Ribéry and Mario Gómez as an opponent. When Bayern scored 2-0 on penalties, he converted his penalty to 2-1.

For the 2014/15 season David Luiz moved to the French Ligue 1 to Paris Saint-Germain . He signed a five-year contract with the capital club and reigning French champions until June 30, 2019. Paris paid a € 49.5 million transfer fee to Chelsea for David Luiz. Never before has a defensive player received more transfer fees.

David Luiz returned to Chelsea on August 31, 2016. The transfer fee was 38 million pounds sterling .

Shortly before the start of the 2019/20 season, David Luiz moved to Arsenal .

David Luiz obtained Portuguese nationality while playing for Benfica. However, it was never an option for him not to play for the Brazilian national team. At the Junior Soccer World Cup 2007 David Luiz was on the starting line-up in two preliminary round games. He was not used in the round of 16 against Spain. After the disappointing World Cup in South Africa for the Brazilian national team , David Luiz made his first appearance for this team in the first friendly match after the World Cup under new coach Mano Menezes . In the friendship game against the USA Menezes offered him in the starting lineup. Since then, the defender has been called up regularly. In the summer of 2011, he was for the Copa America in Argentina nominated .

On June 28, 2014 Gonzalo Jara's own goal in the round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup against Chile was awarded to him, which meant his first international goal. In the quarter-finals he converted a free kick against Colombia to 2-0. Brazil won the game 2-1.

In the World Cup semi-final against the German national team , David Luiz led the team as captain, as the actual captain Thiago Silva was suspended. Brazil lost the game 7-1. The photos of a crying David Luiz, who apologized to the Brazilian fans after the game, went around the world. Then Brazil delivered another desperate performance against the Netherlands in the game for third place and finished fourth. David Luiz owed the 0: 2.

For the 2018 World Cup , he was not included in the squad of the Brazilian national team.
