Bruno Eduardo Regufe Alves (born November 27, 1981 in Póvoa de Varzim ) is a Portuguese football player of Brazilian descent.

He is the son of former soccer player Washington from Varzim SC and younger brother of Geraldo . Bruno Alves is a tall (189 cm) defender who is mostly used in central defense at his clubs. He was trained in the football schools of FC Porto. Before that, he was loaned to SC Farense , Vitória Guimarães and the Greek first division club AEK Athens as a youth player .

In August 2010, Alves moved from FC Porto to Zenit St. Petersburg for a transfer fee of 22 million euros. With Zenit he became Russian champions in 2010 , but was eliminated in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League play-offs against AJ Auxerre . In the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League he reached the round of 16 with the team, where Zenit was eliminated by FC Twente Enschede . In the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League , he came in three games for use and then in the two knockout games against Benfica . After a 3-2 win at home, the second leg was lost 2-0. In the Premjer-Liga 2011/12 he took first place with Zenit after the first round, which could then be defended in the championship round. Zenit was thus qualified for the group stage of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League . There Zenit could only win the third game against RSC Anderlecht and the last game against AC Milan with 1-0 and finished in third place, which at least made it possible to continue playing in the round of 32 of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . There Zenit met Liverpool FC . Alves was not used in the two games Zenit survived thanks to the away goals rule . Even in the 2-0 first leg defeat at FC Basel , he only sat on the bench, in the 1-0 in the second leg he played again, but one goal was not enough to progress and after 73 minutes he was replaced. In the league , Zenit only finished second this time, but enabled Zenit to qualify for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League . When this began he was no longer in St. Petersburg.

For the 2013/14 season Alves moved to the Turkish runner-up Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2016. Fenerbahçe had to qualify for the group stage in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League , but they failed. Although FC Salzburg was eliminated in the third qualifying round , they lost twice to Arsenal in the playoffs . After all, Fenerbahçe could have continued to play in the group stage of the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League . In June 2013, however, Fenerbahçe was banned from all European competitions by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Chamber because of the manipulation scandal for the following three seasons, although the appeal to the CAS was unsuccessful. He finished the Turkish championship season with Fenerbahçe as a champion. In the 2014/15 season it was enough for second place and the club was then also allowed to qualify for the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League after a year of suspension was suspended. Fenerbahçe failed in the third qualifying round to Shakhtar Donetsk , the Ukrainian runner-up . As a loser, the Turks were allowed to take part in the playoffs of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League , in which the team qualified for the group stage with two wins against Atromitos Athens . Although only two wins, in the home game against Ajax Amsterdam and in the away game at Molde FK , this was enough to reach the round of sixteen against Lokomotiv Moscow as second in the group behind the Norwegians . In the round of 16, a 1-0 home win against his compatriots from Sporting Braga was not enough, as the second leg was lost 4-1. The league finished Fenerbahçe again as runners-up and had thus secured participation in the third qualifying round of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League .

From the summer of 2016, Alves was under contract for one season with the Italian club Cagliari Calcio . He finished eleventh with the Sardinians in the 2016/17 season . In 2017 he moved to the Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. Alves finished third with the Rangers in the championship play-offs . The two-year contract was terminated early on July 11, 2018. A few days later, Alves signed a one-year contract with the Italian first division promoted Parma Calcio . In February 2019 he extended his contract for another year until the end of June 2020 and in January 2020 for another year until the end of June 2021.

National team

Bruno Alves made his debut on June 5, 2007 in a friendly against Kuwait in the Portuguese national team . From then on he belonged to the regular formation and was an important part of the Portuguese selection in the successful qualification for the European Championship 2008 . In the qualifier against Azerbaijan , he scored his first international goal on October 13, 2007. In the European Championship finals , however, he was only used in the third group game and Portugal was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Germany .

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he played seven games and scored the winning goal in the 90th minute of the 2-1 win against Albania . He was also used in the two playoff games against Bosnia and Herzegovina , both of which were won 1-0, and scored the goal of the day in the home game. At the World Cup finals in South Africa , he did not miss a minute of the four Portuguese games, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual world champions Spain .

In the subsequent qualification for the EM 2012 he was used in eight out of ten games. During the European Championship finals , he again did not miss a minute and reached the semi-finals with Portugal, which were lost again on penalties against Spain, where Bruno Alves failed with his attempt from the point.

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , it was only not used in the last two qualifying games. In the playoffs against Sweden , in which Portugal secured the World Cup ticket, he was back in the starting line-up. Overall, he scored four goals in the course of qualifying, making it the third best Portuguese goalscorer. At the World Cup finals in Brazil, he played all three preliminary round matches, after which Portugal was eliminated early.

In qualifying for the Euro 2016 , he played four of eight games. He was then appointed to the Portuguese squad for the 2016 European Championship . There he came in the semifinals against Wales as a substitute for the injured Pepe for his only mission and became European champion with the team.
