Rui Pedro dos Santos Patrício (born February 15, 1988 in Marrazes ) is a Portuguese football goalkeeper who has been under contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers since July 2018 . He is the goalkeeper of the Portuguese national team , with which he became European champion in 2016 .

Career

society

Patrício has been with Sporting Lisbon since he was a teenager . On November 19, 2006, he made his debut in the Primeira Liga . This was his only use in the 2006/07 season. When goalkeeper Ricardo left the club before the 2007/08 season, Patrício, Tiago and newcomer Vladimir Stojković fought for his successor. Patrício finally prevailed in the middle of the first half of the season and has been Sportings' regular goalkeeper ever since. He won the trophy in 2007, 2008 and 2015 and the Supercup in the following years . He also took part in the UEFA Champions League six times , with the 2008/09 round of 16 being the greatest success. In the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , Patrício and Sporting were only eliminated in the semi-finals against Athletic Bilbao .

After Sporting Lisbon failed to qualify for the Champions League in May 2018 , the club's training grounds and dressing room were stormed by violent supporters. His team-mate Bas Dost suffered a head injury. Then Patrício - in addition to coach Jorge Jesus , Bruno Fernandes , Gelson Martins , William Carvalho , Daniel Podence and Bas Dost - canceled his contract at the end of the season, because there were "valid motives" for a unilateral contract termination.

For the 2018/19 season, Patrício is moving to the English Premier League for Wolverhampton Wanderers . He signed a contract with the newcomer trained by the Portuguese Nuno Espírito Santo , which runs until June 30, 2022.

Rui Patrício during the Euro 2012

Patrício first played for the Portuguese U-16s in 2003. With the U17 he took part in the first qualifying round for the U-17 European Championship 2005 in September 2004 , which Portugal survived in Belarus with three wins in which he conceded only one goal. In the second qualifying round in March 2005 in Croatia , however, he had to accept five goals and retired with his team as third in the group. In October 2006 he survived the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Championship 2007 with the U-19 selection in Norway and only had to concede two goals in the 2-2 win against the hosts . In the second qualifying round in Scotland in May 2007, he only conceded two goals against the hosts , but his teammates shot four. As group winners, Portugal finally qualified for the finals in Austria in July . Patrício did not take part in this. Instead, he was in the Portuguese goal at the U-20 World Cup in Canada in 2007 , but failed with his team in the round of 16 with 0: 1 at what would later be third Chile .

Without having played an A international match, Patrício was part of the Portuguese squad at the 2008 European Championship . As expected, he was not used during the tournament because the Portuguese goal was still Ricardo , whose post he had taken over at Sporting in 2007. Ricardo lost his regular place in goal after the European Championships and did not make another international match, but he was initially inherited by Quim . In the last two qualifying games for the U-21 European Championship 2009 , Patrício was again in the gate of the Portuguese U-21 team, which lost 2-0 to England at Wembley and a 2-2 draw in the last Game against Ireland missed the finals.

When Quim lost his place in the goal of the senior national team in early 2009, Eduardo stood in goal as his successor at the 2010 World Cup . Patrício was not considered for the tournament and returned for the last three games of qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 in August and September 2010 in the goal of the U-21 selection. With a 1-0 defeat against England, the Portuguese missed the finals again.

On November 17, 2010 Patrício came in the 4-0 win against world champions Spain to his A international debut when he came on for Eduardo in the second half. From then on, he fought with Eduardo for the place in goal, in which Beto and Anthony Lopes later intervened, but which largely went out in favor of Patrício. He played the Euro 2012 , when Portugal was eliminated in the semi-finals against Spain on penalties, as a regular goalkeeper. At the 2014 World Cup , he was also in goal in the opening game against eventual world champions Germany . But after conceding four goals and injuring himself, he was replaced by Beto in the second game against the USA . Beto then played in the last group game against Ghana , which the Portuguese won 2-1. Regardless of this, Portugal left early.

After the World Cup, Patrício got his regular place in goal back and was used in all qualifying matches for the Euro 2016 , whereas his competitors were only used in friendly matches. Accordingly, he was included in the Portuguese squad for the 2016 European Championship and then guarded the gate in all games. In the quarter-finals against Poland , he played his 50th international match and secured his team a place in the semifinals on penalties . After the final, which the Portuguese won 1-0 after extra time against hosts France, he was the only player to be awarded the mark “Very Good” and “Player of the Game” by the kicker sports magazine for his performance. He was also of the UEFA in the team of the tournament called.

At the 2018 World Cup , he was eliminated with Portugal in the round of 16 after a 1: 2 against Uruguay.
