Luke Alexander Matheson (born October 2, 2002 in Rochdale ) is an English football player who has been under contract with the first division club Wolverhampton Wanderers since January 2020 . The right full-back has been an English U18 international since October 2019 .

Career

Born and raised in Rochdale , Greater Manchester , Luke Matheson comes from the youth division of the local Rochdale AFC . He made his debut in the first team on September 4, 2018, when he started in the 2-1 home win against FC Bury in the group stage of the EFL Trophy . At 15 years and 336 days, he became the youngest player ever to play for Rochdale AFC and was voted Player of the Game following the game. In EFL League One , he played his first game on January 19, 2019 (29th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town , when he was exchanged for Matt Done at half-time . For the men's selection of Dale , he made seven competitive games this 2018/19 season .

In the following season 2019/20 , the young established full-back gradually in the starting lineup of head coach Brian Barry-Murphy . On September 25, 2019, at the age of 16, he first became known to a broad audience when he was able to equalize to 1-1 in the league cup match against Manchester United . The game ended in a 5-6 defeat on penalties . On October 31 of that year he signed his first professional contract with the Dale . His first league goal was on January 11, 2020 (27th matchday) in a 2-0 home win against Bolton Wanderers .

On January 31, 2020 changed Luke Matheson for a fee in the amount of one million pounds for first division side Wolverhampton Wanderers , but was up to the end of the season back awarded to the AFC Rochdale 2019/20. He played a total of 20 league games in the 2019/20 season and joined the Wolves for the first time in mid-July 2020 .

National team

Matheson played an international match for the England U17 national team in February 2019 .

The full-back has been in action for the U18s since October 2019 .
