Rúben Diogo da Silva Neves (born March 13, 1997 in Mozelos ) is a Portuguese football player . He is under contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers in England and is a senior international .
Career
society
From the age of eight, Neves was trained in the youth academy of FC Porto , at the end of which the club loaned him to Padroense FC from the neighboring town of Senhora da Hora for a year . For the 2014/15 season, the midfielder moved up to the professional squad and made his debut in the men's division on the first day of the league in a 2-0 win against Marítimo Funchal . This was followed by 36 more season games in national cup competitions and in the European Cup, in which he scored and prepared one goal each. In the Champions League , Neves made it to the quarter-finals with Porto, and in the domestic league they were runner-up three points behind Benfica . On October 20, 2015, at the age of 18 years and 221 days, he played the Champions League group game against Maccabi Tel Aviv as the youngest team captain in the history of the competition. He replaced the previous record holder Rafael van der Vaart . While the midfielder was also used regularly in the following season and temporarily led the team as deputy captain, between summer 2015 and spring 2016 it was only enough for only 18 games.
For a transfer fee, which is said to have been around 18 million euros, the Portuguese moved to the second-rate English championship at Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 2017/18 season . The club hired its compatriot Nuno Espírito Santo as the new head coach. Here he became a regular player straight away, scored six goals and only missed four league games in his first year due to suspensions. As a champion, Neves rose to the Premier League with the Wolves . Also in the top English league he maintained his place in the defensive midfield and managed with the club to the semi-finals of the FA Cup , while seventh place was reached in the league. As a result, Neves won all qualifying games with the team, which made it possible to move into the group stage of the Europa League .
National team
Neves was active for five Portuguese youth national teams. He took part with the U17 as captain in the 2014 European Championship , which was eliminated by the eventual winners England . In November 2015, the midfielder of national coach Fernando Santos was used in a friendly match against Russia for the first time in the A-selection . Neves and Portugal beat the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League final in June 2019 .
