The finals of the 32nd U-17 European Football Championship took place on May 9-21, 2014 in Malta . It was the first final round of a UEFA competition on the Mediterranean island and also the last with eight teams. As of 2015, the final round will be held again - as last in 2002 - with 16 teams. All UEFA member associations applied to participate. Malta was selected alongside the two hosts for 2015 and 2016 at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting on March 20, 2012 in Istanbul . For the first time Gibraltar, which was confirmed by the UEFA Executive Committee as a temporary member of UEFA on October 1, 2012, took part in the competition, but failed to qualify for the elite round.

qualification

The first qualifying round, in which all applicants except host Malta took part, was drawn on December 5, 2012. Germany received a bye for the elite round in advance. The remaining 52 teams played in 13 groups of four teams each, the group first and second as well as the best group third qualified for the final round. According to a decision by the UEFA Executive Committee, Spain and Gibraltar could not be drawn into the same group. The games took place from September 21 to November 19, 2013. Austria and Switzerland met in Group 12, which was held in Denmark from September 26th to October 1st 2013, and Kazakhstan.

The elite round, in which the seven final round participants are determined in seven groups of four teams, took place in spring 2014. Germany prevailed in Group 5 with two wins (4: 0 against Georgia and 3: 0 against Ireland) and one draw (1: 1 against Serbia) as first in the table. Switzerland also qualified for the finals with the same record (against Spain, Russia and Wales). Austria could not qualify for the finals (opponents: Netherlands, France and Sweden). After a tie on points and goals in the decisive game, Turkey had to go to penalties against Poland after a 0-0 draw. This was won 5: 4.

Mode of the final tournament

The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. Their winners reached the final; Third place was not played out. The regular playing time was 40 minutes twice. From the semi-finals onwards, after regular playing time there was no extra time after a draw, but a penalty shoot-out immediately afterwards .
