The 3rd U-18 European Football Championship took place from May 13-22, 1983 in England . France won the title with a 1-0 victory over Czechoslovakia . The FRG retired as runners-up in the preliminary round. The GDR , Austria and Switzerland had not qualified for the finals.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners reached the semifinals. The winners of the semi-finals played for the title in the final, the losers contested the game for third place.
