U-21 European Football Championship 2011 / qualification
For the first time, all 53 member associations of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) took part in qualifying for the 2011 U-21 European Football Championship .
For the first time , the final round was awarded to Denmark , which as the organizer was automatically qualified for the round of the last eight teams. All other 52 teams had to qualify in the preliminary round.
mode
The 52 national teams were drawn in ten groups - eight groups of five and two groups of six teams. The national selections played their encounters with a home and away leg. The group matches were played in the period from 28./29. March 2009 to September 7th 2010.
The respective group winners as well as the four best runners-up were qualified for the play-offs for entry into the finals. These then determined seven participants in the final round in the first and second leg.
Performance of the teams from the German-speaking area
Germany
In its group, Germany struggled primarily with the Czech Republic and the surprisingly strong Icelanders. In the four games against these two teams they only reached 2 points - in Hafnarfjörður there was even a 1: 4 defeat. Since no victory could be won in Northern Ireland, the qualification for the U-21 European Championship did not succeed. Germany finished third with 12 points, four points behind Iceland.
Austria
As in the U-21 European Championship qualification in 2009, Austria disqualified itself through its own fault. Although Belarus and Scotland, the two direct competitors for promotion, were superior in terms of play, they narrowly missed participation in the tournament. Their weakness away from home cost the team a lot of points, so it took a lot of effort to celebrate a 2-1 victory in Azerbaijan with goals in the 90th and 93rd minutes after the Azerbaijani goalkeeper received the red card. In Albania, after a 2-2 deficit, they achieved a 2-2 win, although two penalties were not used.
Even after the 3: 3 home draw against Belarus, which is clearly dominated by the Austrians and could not be won until a goal conceded at the last minute, a victory in Scotland could still have achieved a promotion place. However, despite numerous chances, they gave up a 1-0 lead and lost 2-1. Behind Belarus and Scotland (17 points each), only third place remained with 14 points.
Switzerland
Switzerland qualified relatively safely for the playoffs with 20 points and group victory in group 2. With a total of 5-2 goals, the Swedes were left with no chance, and Switzerland qualified for the U21 European Championship finals for the third time after 2002 and 2004.
draw
All teams were divided into five pots, with pots A, B, C and D each comprising ten teams, while in pot E twelve teams were divided. The coefficients of the participants were decisive for the pot division, with those in pot A having the highest and those in pot E the lowest. Ten groups were formed from this.
