history
The Northern Irish U-21 played their first international match against their neighbor from Ireland . The game on March 8, 1978 ended in a 1-1 draw.
So far, the junior team has not yet qualified for a European championship.
Development since 2006
Since the next European Championship after the EM in 2006 did not take place two years later, as usual, but took place in 2007 , the corresponding qualification was played out in a rapid process. Starting with a preliminary round, over a short group stage with three teams and the play-off games. Northern Ireland had to enter the preliminary round. There the team met Liechtenstein . Both games were won confidently in the first leg there was a 4-1 victory, on home soil a 4-0 victory. Then there was a group draw. In group 10, Germany and Romania were drawn. There was only one game against each team, so the teams had one away and one home rights. In the first game, on August 16, 2006, the team played away against Romania. A 3-0 defeat quickly buried dreams of a play-off participation. Two weeks later, the selection faced Germany. The DFB kickers had a hard time against the island footballers. However, this game was also lost 3-2 from the Northern Irish perspective.
In qualifying for Euro 2009 , the Northern Irish had to compete in Group 10 with Germany , Israel , Moldova and Luxembourg . After eight games, four wins and four defeats were recorded. Third place was achieved, five points behind Germany and Israel. All four games were lost against both teams. Both comparisons ended 0: 3 against Germany. Five different shooters, Rouwen Hennings (2), Mesut Özil in the first leg, Toni Kroos , Daniel Halfar and Dennis Aogo in the second leg, met against the Northern Irish. With a goal difference of 13:12, the island footballers had a positive relationship. The team celebrated its biggest win on November 16, 2007 against Liechtenstein.
