On October 26, 2008, Aogo received his first appearance against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim at Hamburger SV. The following day he was in the starting line-up because both Marcell Jansen and Thimothée Atouba could not play due to injury. In the course of the season he earned a regular place. Aogo scored his first competitive goal for Hamburg in the second round match of the DFB Cup against Eintracht Trier on October 25, 2011, which HSV won 2-1.

After David Jarolím moved to France and Paolo Guerrero to Brazil, Aogo was the longest-serving player in HSV's professional squad. Coach Thorsten Fink honored this with his appointment to the team council.

In August 2013, Aogo and his teammate Tomás Rincón were suspended from HSV for a game after they had used two days off for a trip to Mallorca after a 5-1 home defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .

FC Schalke 04

A few days later Aogo has included a purchase option until the end of the 2013/14 season at FC Schalke 04 on loan. At Schalke, he was used as a left full-back and in the defensive midfield. He was one of the more consistent players in the squad at a time when the team's performance fluctuated a lot. On November 29, 2013, Aogo tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee in training in a collision with Ralf Fährmann and was out for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, he was firmly signed by Schalke 04 on February 12, 2014. He received a contract valid until 2017 with an option for a further year. After around eight months of rehabilitation, Aogo returned to a charity match on July 19, 2014.

For the 2014/15 season , Aogo was in the first half of the season both in defensive midfield and as a left full-back. In the first half of the season he only missed two games. In the Champions League , he played all six group games. At the training camp in Doha during the winter break, he suffered a muscle injury and missed the start of the second half of the season. After his recovery and three league games, he missed all competitive games in March 2015 due to back problems. On April 5, 2015, the 27th matchday, he made his comeback again and played all league games until the end of the season. At the end of the season he had played 25 games in the Bundesliga, in which he gave one assist.

Under coach André Breitenreiter , Aogo secured his regular position as a left full-back in the first half of the 2015/16 season . His contract, which expired at the end of the 2016/17 season, was not extended.

VfB Stuttgart

VfB occupied the relegation place and relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after losing relegation against 1. FC Union Berlin . Then Aogo left the club when his contract ended.

Hannover 96

At the beginning of September 2019, Aogo joined the relegated Hannover 96 . He signed a contract until the end of the 2019/20 season . Under Mirko Slomka , Aogo made four appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga until the beginning of November . Due to an irritation of the Achilles tendon, he was no longer used under the new head coach Kenan Kocak . At the end of January 2020, Aogo and the club agreed to terminate the contract.

End of career

At the end of August 2020, Aogo, who had not found a new club after his engagement in Hanover, decided to end his active career.

On March 23, 2007, Aogo made his debut in the German U21 national team . He was on the starting line-up for the game against Austria. His greatest international success was winning the 2009 European Championship in Sweden under national coach Horst Hrubesch . In the final against England , Aogo made a brief appearance seven minutes before the end.

On January 21, 2010, Aogo was appointed to the national team 's senior squad for the first time by national coach Joachim Loew to take part in a performance test with a view to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On May 6, 2010 Loew appointed him to the expanded squad for the 2010 World Cup. On May 13, 2010 Aogo made his debut in the senior national team. In the game against Malta he was in the starting line-up. In the end, he made it to the final roster . At the 2010 World Cup, Aogo played a left defender in the 3-2 win against Uruguay in the game for third place .

Although Aogo offered poor performance at HSV in the 2011/12 season , Loew held on to him and appointed him to the squad against France for the first test match in 2012. Due to the injury-related loss of captain Philipp Lahm , Aogo slipped into the starting line-up and stood after the 1: 2 defeat in the focus of criticism. As a result , it was not taken into account for the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine .

In May 2013 he received a nomination for the DFB selection again after a year when he was nominated by Löw for the games during the USA trip against Ecuador and against the United States. On May 29, 2013 Aogo had his return to the national team after a year in the 4-2 win against Ecuador in Boca Raton . On June 2, 2013, Aogo played his last of a total of twelve international matches for Germany against the USA.

Style of play

Aogo played in the left full-back position as well as in the defensive midfield. His handling of the ball at the foot, his running skills and his good tactical training were appreciated. Ex-national youth coach Horst Hrubesch said of Aogo that he had "a good left foot, [was] clever, tactically flexible and [could] play a good diagonal ball". In the past, his game was criticized in the forward movement. Later he was considered a player who could provide stability on the defensive and accents on the offensive at the same time. Sometimes it was criticized that it was slower because the game structure was too casual. Aogo put this back to his Nigerian origins, since in Nigeria football is interpreted through a mix of technical adeptness and a certain casualness at the same time.
