David Jarolím [ ˈdavid ˈjarɔ̹liːm ] (born May 17, 1979 in Čáslav ) is a former Czech football player .

As an active player, he played 318 Bundesliga games , 257 of which for Hamburger SV . He also played briefly in France and, at the end of his career, in the Czech Republic, where he ended his career in 2014. With the Czech national team , he took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland .

After his playing career, he initially worked as a sports director and assistant coach at the Czech first division club FK Mladá Boleslav . He now works as a coach in the third Czech division for the Prague district club SC Olympia Radotín .

Career

Career in the club

Born in Čáslav , Jarolím spent part of his childhood in France and started playing football in the youth department of FC Rouen ; His father Karel worked as a professional soccer player for the second division from 1987 to 1990. After the family returned to his native country, he continued playing football in the youth department of Slavia Prague . With Slavia he was Czech A youth champion. In 1995 he moved to FC Bayern Munich . On May 3, 1997 he made his debut in the Regionalliga Süd for the FCB amateurs. For the 1997/98 season he moved into the professional squad, but played mostly for the amateurs. His only appearances for the professional team of FC Bayern were on April 13, 1999 in the 1: 2 defeat in Kaiserslautern , when he came on for Ali Daei in the 80th minute, on July 17, 1999 in a 2: 1 victory in the league cup final against Werder Bremen , when he came on for Lothar Matthäus in the 79th minute and on March 22, 2000 in the 2-0 defeat in the last round of the Champions League at Dynamo Kiev , when he came on for Roque Santa Cruz in the 77th minute .Minute was used.

In 2000/01 he moved to the second division club 1. FC Nürnberg , for whom he scored his first goal on August 20, 2000 in a 2-0 home win over LR Ahlen with the opening goal. He belonged to 1. FC Nürnberg - with whom he was promoted for two seasons and relegated again in his last year - until August 31, 2003. From 2003 to 2012 he was under contract with the Bundesliga club Hamburger SV . On December 15, 2005 Jarolím played in the UEFA Cup against the team in which his brother Lukáš played: Hamburger SV won their home game 2-0 against Slavia Prague. For the 2006/07 season he was appointed deputy team captain by coach Thomas Doll . After Rafael van der Vaart's departure , Jarolím was transferred to the captain's armband in 2008/09 , which he had to cede to newcomer Heiko Westermann under coach Armin Veh . On April 21, 2009, he extended his contract to June 30, 2012.

Under Armin Veh, Jarolím was no longer an undisputed regular player, as was his successor Michael Oenning and Thorsten Fink . Jarolím sat on the bench most of the time and only occasionally came on short assignments. A departure in the winter break of the 2011/12 season was considered certain, as sports director Frank Arnesen did not want to put any obstacles in his way in the event of a possible change and would have let him go free of charge. He was preferred to his position in defensive midfield Gojko Kačar , Tomás Rincón and Robert Tesche . After unsatisfactory performance by the defensive midfield at the start of the second half of the season, in which they conceded a 5-1 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund , Jarolím returned to the starting line-up after good training on the following matchday in a 2-1 away win against Hertha BSC . After his good performance, coach Fink announced that Jarolím was "part of the team" and could be "important for the team in the coming months". A change during the winter break was therefore off the table. During the second half of the season, Jarolím developed into a regular player and top performer in the relegation battle. According to critics, he was Hamburg's “best man” in many games. His contract, which expired at the end of the season, was not extended by the club. On matchday 33, HSV secured their league in their last home game with a 0-0 draw against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . After the game, Jarolím, at the time the longest-serving professional, was officially adopted.

On August 29, 2012 Jarolím joined the French first division club FC Évian Thonon Gaillard for the 2012/13 season . His league debut took place on September 15, 2012 (5th matchday) in a 3-0 win at home against SC Bastia . After just three months, he asked for a termination of the contract at the end of November 2012 for "personal reasons", which was approved. In total, he came for Évian TG to five league appearances and one cup.

On January 15, 2013 he was committed to the end of the 2012/13 season by FK Mladá Boleslav . He made his league debut on February 24, 2013 in a 1-0 home win against 1. FK Příbram . He scored his first goal on February 23, 2014 in a 2-2 draw in the away game against Slovan Liberec with the connection goal to make it 2-1 in the 71st minute. Due to physical complaints - knees and ankles had not been pain-free for years - Jarolim ended his football career.

A return to Hamburger SV as a coach was planned for the time after that .

National team

Jarolím played in the Czech U15, U16, U18, U20 and U21 national teams . On October 3, 2005, after good performances at Hamburger SV, he was nominated for the first time for the Czech national team for the qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup against the Netherlands and Finland . On October 8, 2005, he made his debut in the World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands in Prague when he came on for Jiri Stajner in the 76th minute . The then national coach Karel Brückner appointed him to the squad for the 2006 World Cup . In the first two group games, in which there was, among other things, a 3-0 win against the USA , Jarolím was not used. He made his first appearance in the tournament in the last group game against Italy , which was played in the Volksparkstadion . Jarolím came on as a substitute for Milan Baros in the 64th minute when the score was 0: 1 from the Czechs' perspective . He could no longer prevent the 2-0 defeat against the eventual title holder. The Czech Republic was eliminated after the group stage.

In qualifying for the 2008 European Championship , the Czechs prevailed over Germany as group winners . Jarolím was used in six games, with one goal and one assist in the first game . He was not used in the two games against the DFB selection, not even in the 3-0 win at the Munich Allianz Arena . Jarolím made it into the European Championship squad and was in the starting line-up in the first group game against Switzerland, the opening game. He was substituted on in the next two games against Portugal and Turkey . Also at the EM 2008 the Czech Republic dropped out after the group stage.

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , the Czech Republic took third place behind its neighbors from Slovakia and Slovenia , which means that qualification was missed. Jarolím made six appearances in qualifying. His last appearance for the national team was on October 14, 2009, when he was in the starting line- up in the last World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland and was replaced by Michal Papadopulos after 83 minutes .

Career as trainer and functionary

From the summer of 2014 Jarolím worked for around three and a half years as a sports director and assistant coach at FK Mladá Boleslav . Since September 2018 he has been coaching the Czech third division club SC Olympia Radotín , a Prague district club.
