Craig George Cathcart (born February 6, 1989 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish football player who plays on the position of central defender and is currently under contract with Watford FC .
Career
Manchester United
Craig Cathcart moved to Manchester United's youth academy in 2005 and subsequently played for the club's various junior teams. Since his chances of playing in the first team were very low, the club loaned him to Royal Antwerp in the Belgian second division in 2007 . The following season he spent a season on loan at Plymouth Argyle in the 2008/09 Football League Championship . Cathcart made a name for himself as a regular player in the English second division and just managed to stay up with his team. He also spent the coming season in the second-highest English division, this time on loan from Watford FC . In three months between September and December 2009, he completed twelve league games in the Football League Championship 2009/10 . Since his prospects in Manchester were not better even after his return, he moved to Blackpool FC for the following season .
Blackpool FC
Blackpool had also spent the last season in the English second division and was there completely surprisingly promoted to the Premier League . After a sixth place in the regular season, the team had only eliminated Nottingham Forest in the play-offs before Cardiff City was defeated in the final at Wembley . Cathcart was able to celebrate his Premier League debut in 2010/11 on August 14, 2010 in a 4-0 away win at Wigan Athletic . In the following years, Cathcart was also used regularly and contributed his part to the good start of the season for his new team. Nevertheless, it was not enough in the end and Blackpool was immediately relegated as the penultimate. In the second division season 2011/12 they initially missed direct promotion as fifth and then also lost the promotion playoff final with 1: 2 against third-placed West Ham United in front of 78,523 spectators at Wembley. In the following season they fell short of expectations in fifteenth and in 2013/14 Blackpool had only two points ahead of a relegation zone.
Watford FC
For the 2014/15 season he moved to league rivals FC Watford on a free transfer , with whom he returned to the Premier League at the end of the season as runner-up in the second division . The Premier League season 2015/16 , which was marked by surprises, ended Watford on a place in the secured mid-table. In the 2015/16 FA Cup , he advanced to the semi-finals with Watford, but lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace .
In the national team
In 2007 he was part of the European squad at the UEFA CAF Meridian Cup for U-18 teams. With the U-21 team , he took part in the qualifications for the U-21 European Championship in 2009 and 2011 and met the eventual world champions Mats Hummels , Sami Khedira , in the games against Germany on September 5, 2008 and November 13 . Toni Kroos , Thomas Müller , Mesut Özil and André Schürrle .
Cathcart made his debut for the Northern Irish national team on September 3, 2010 in a 1-0 win over Slovenia in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship . He not only played for the full season, but also provided the template for the winning goal. From March 2011 he was regularly used in the other European Championship and 2012/13 World Cup qualifiers in his country. In qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, he was initially only a substitute and only made two short appearances. But he played the last two games again as a regular in central defense and in the 1-1 draw against Finland he helped secure participation in the finals with his first national team goal. Northern Ireland qualified for a European Championship for the first time and Cathcart was added to the Northern Irish squad . As a regular player, he played all four of the team's games over the full 90 minutes. In the opening game against Poland, he was the first Northern Irishman to receive a yellow card at a European Championship finals. Northern Ireland reached the round of 16 and lost to Wales.
