It was not until 2014/15 that the team was promoted from the third division to Ligue 2 Senegals.

Change to France

After players like Papiss Demba Cissé , Sadio Mané and Diafra Sakho had made the leap from Génération Foot to French professional football to FC Metz in the past , Ismaïla Sarr was also given the same in the summer of 2016. The 18-year-old signed a five -year contract with the newcomer to the French Ligue 1 and made his debut in the first league game on August 13, 2016 in a 3-2 home win over Lille OSC when he was coached by Philippe Hinschberger in the 73rd minute for Florent Mollet came out on the pitch and was fouled three minutes later, resulting in a penalty which Mevlüt Erdinç equalized 2-2. In the further course of the season, Hinschberger initially used him alternately as a left and right winger, with Sarr also being able to register several times as a goal scorer and template provider. Especially in the last third of the season he was seen as dangerous offensive and contributed five goals and as many assists in 31 championship appearances throughout the season. There were also two appearances in the Coupe de la Ligue 2016/17 , in which he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain . Due to ankle problems and thigh strains, he dropped out several times during the season, but always found his way to the starting XI.

For 17 million euros to Stade Rennes

Due to his performance in the past season, Sarr was subsequently courted by various clubs and signed a four-year contract with Stade Rennes on July 26, 2017 . The rumored transfer fee was around 17 million euros, which made Sarr the second most expensive transfer in the history of FC Metz. Including bonus payments that were agreed between the two clubs, the total should amount to around 30 million euros. Also, the FC Barcelona was interested in the winger and had an offer set. Other interested parties included Borussia Dortmund , RB Leipzig and Newcastle United . In the first game of the season on August 5, 2017, coach Christian Gourcuff let him play the full game as a center forward in the 1-1 away draw against ES Troyes AC . In the following six league games Gourcuff continued to use him as a starting center forward, with Sarr scoring one goal and preparing two more goals.

In the 2: 2 draw away against AS Saint-Etienne on September 24, 2017 he retired during a duel with Kévin Théophile-Catherine a tear of the Achilles tendon to, had to subsequently undergo surgery and then fell until the beginning of 2018 due to an injury from . On January 7, 2018, he made his comeback in a 6-1 home game defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the first round of the Coupe de France 2017/18 , but was only on the pitch as a substitute. After another brief appearance in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue 2017/18 against FC Toulouse , he celebrated his return to the league a few days later. By the end of the 2017/18 season , Sarr completed all remaining league games except for two games in which he was not in the squad, and finished the season with the team in fifth place in the final standings. In the Coupe de la Ligue he was also used in the semifinals, but was eliminated there with the team against the eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. In a total of 24 league games that the Senegalese played this season, he had a record of five goals and just as many hits, as in the previous season.

National team career

In 2015, the 17-year-old Sarr made four appearances for the Senegalese U-23 national team at the U-23 African Cup of Nations in 2015 in his own country. While he had contributed one assist in each of the first two group matches, he sat unused on the bench in the third group match against his colleagues from Zambia . From the subsequent semi-finals, which Senegal just lost 1-0 to Nigeria , coach Joseph Koto put him back on the left wing position. He also played the entire game for third place, which only ended in a loss to South Africa on penalties . Due to his performance at FC Metz, he was called up for the first time in the Senegalese national team in August 2016 and made his team debut on September 3, 2016 with a 2-0 victory in a group match in the qualifying for the Africa Cup 2017 against Namibia ; from the 67th minute he replaced Sadio Mané.

After successfully qualifying, Senegal had won all of its six group games, Sarr took part with the team in the preparation for the Africa Cup 2017 , which started in mid-January 2017 , and was used in two friendly games against Libya and the Republic of the Congo . In the game against Libya he did the preparatory work for Moussa Sows goal to 1-0 in minute 18 and scored in the 63rd minute of the game himself the gate to the 2-0 lead; the game ended 2-1. In the subsequent Africa Cup of 2017, Senegalese national coach Aliou Cissé only used him as a substitute in the first two group matches against Tunisia and Zimbabwe ; only in the following third group game against Algeria did Sarr play through the full 90 minutes. As the winner of Group B, Senegal made it to the quarter-finals and was eliminated from the current competition on penalties against eventual African champions Cameroon . In this game, Sarr was unused on the bench. At just 18 years of age, he was the youngest participant of all nations in this major tournament. He was 26 years younger than the oldest participant Essam El-Hadary .

His next international match should then take a few months; On June 5, he played in a friendly international match against Uganda and, a few days later, played the first group game of the qualifying for the Africa Cup of 2019 against Equatorial Guinea . Almost three months later, he was used in two qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup against Burkina Faso and contributed a goal in the second game on September 5. Then it took another six months before Sarr was able to record further international appearances. In March 2018 he was then used in two friendly matches against Uzbekistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina . To date (as of May 21, 2018), Sarr has played in at least 13 international matches and scored two goals. Sarr was nominated for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . He was on the pitch in all three games during the preliminary round for the entire season.

Sarr is part of the Senegalese squad at the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 in Egypt . In the last group game, the 3-0 win over Kenya, Sarr took the lead to 1-0 and a few minutes later gave the template for the final score.
