Africa Cup 2017 / qualification

The qualification for the Africa Cup 2017 in Gabon started on June 12, 2015 and ended on September 4, 2016.

mode

For the first time, all 51 registered teams took part in the group stage of qualification. These competed in groups of four teams and thus in groups A to M. The hosts Gabon also competed in the qualification in the context of friendly matches, but were certainly qualified. The hosts Gabon, all group winners and the two best runners-up (except from Group I with hosts Gabon, as well as from Group G, because of the withdrawal of Chad) qualified for the final round.

Group stage

Host Gabon automatically qualified for the finals and did not participate in the qualification. Eritrea and Somalia also did not participate.

In the group stage, all 51 registered teams took part in 12 groups with 4 teams each and one group with 3 teams. The 13 group winners and the two best runners-up qualified alongside host Gabon for the Africa Cup 2017.
