Africa Cup 2013 / Qualification

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The qualification for the Africa Cup 2013 began on January 15, 2012 with the game São Tomé and Príncipe against Lesotho. In contrast to previous qualifications, this qualification did not also serve as a World Cup qualification. The qualification for the Africa Cup 2012 functioned as a pre-qualification, as the participants in that championship were already qualified for the 3rd round of this qualification.

Due to time constraints, the participants in the final round of the Africa Cup 2013 were determined in three knockout rounds. In a first selection round, the lowest ranked teams in the FIFA world rankings competed against each other in order to reduce the field to 44 teams. In a second round, the remaining 28 teams that were not participants in the Africa Cup of 2012 met each other. These played out 14 winners in the first and second leg, who in turn competed in a third qualifying round against the 16 participants of the 2012 Africa Cup. The winners qualified for the finals alongside hosts South Africa.

On January 30, 2010, Togo was excluded from qualifying for the 2013 Africa Cup (→  reason ), but this decision was reversed on May 14, 2010.

The national teams from Djibouti , Eritrea , Comoros , Mauritania , Mauritius and Somalia did not take part.

The first legs were scheduled for the 8th, the second leg for January 22nd, 2012. The first leg between São Tomé and Príncipe and Lesotho has been postponed to January 15. Swaziland withdrew for financial reasons ahead of the first leg.
