Victor Moses (born December 12, 1990 in Kaduna ) is a Nigerian - English football player .

origin

Moses grew up as the son of a Christian pastor and a missionary in Kaduna . When religious unrest broke out in Nigeria around the turn of the millennium, both of his parents were killed by rioters who broke into their home. Thereupon Moses was brought to England by his uncle at the age of eleven, fearing that he, too, might be assaulted. There he applied for asylum and was housed with a host family in south London . He later took on British citizenship . It wasn't until the spring of 2009 that his history in England became public when his club went to the press.

Club career

Youth football

Moses was discovered at the age of 13 at Stanley Technical High School by scouts of the traditional London club Crystal Palace and signed up. He had not previously belonged to a club and was only active in football parks.

Thanks to his contract signing, he subsequently switched to the renowned Whitgift School , in whose school team (Crystal Palace Youth Department) he was trained by former Palace star Steve Kember and former Chelsea player Colin Pates . In 2004 he won the National School Cup . He scored a total of 50 goals this season for his school, ten of them in his first game for the team. In the final of the National School Cup he scored all five goals for a 5-0 win over the Healing specialist science college of Grimsby . Moses signed his first professional contract with Palace until 2012.

Professional football

Moses as a player from Crystal Palace .

In the 2007/08 season he made his debut for the first time in the professional team of Palace. In his first season he came to 13 season appearances with three goals. The club just missed direct promotion to the Premier League with fifth place in the table and later failed in the play-off with two 0-1 defeats at Bristol City .

During the 2008/09 season, his playing times increased continuously until he had a regular place on the left wing at the end of the first half of the season. The team played against relegation for a long time and ended up in 15th place in the table.

In the 2009/10 season, the team played in the first half of the season with a once again improved Moses for promotion. During the season, however, the precarious financial situation of the club became known, whereupon Moses' departure became apparent. On January 31, 2010, he moved to the Premier League club Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee of the equivalent of three million euros.

In August 2012, he moved within the league to Chelsea . On September 2, 2013 Moses was loaned to Liverpool FC until the end of the season and to Stoke City for the 2014/15 season.

For the 2015/16 season , Moses initially returned to Chelsea. In the 1-0 defeat in the FA Community Shield against Arsenal , he made his first competitive appearance for Chelsea in two years. On September 1, 2015, he extended his contract to June 30, 2019 and moved to West Ham United on loan until the end of the season .

For the 2016/17 season , Moses returned to Chelsea and was added to the first team squad by coach Antonio Conte . He was mostly in the starting line-up in 34 of the 38 league games and scored three goals. At the end of the season he was English champion . Also in the 2017/18 season , Moses was part of the regular staff and played in 28 league games in which he scored three goals.

National team

So far, Moses has played through England's U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams.

With the English U-17 national team, he took part in the U-17 European Championship in Belgium in 2007 . England made it to the final, where they lost 1-0 to the Spanish selection. With three goals ex aequo with the German Toni Kroos, Moses was the tournament's top scorer.

In the same year he also took part in the U-17 World Cup in South Korea. England and Moses got off to a strong start with winning the group in the preliminary round. Moses contributed three of the eight preliminary round goals, but injured himself in the final group game against Brazil and was out for the rest of the tournament. Without Moses, England then failed after a 1: 4 defeat in the quarter-finals to Germany.

In 2008 he took part in the U-19 European Championship in the Czech Republic with the English U-19 national team. England was eliminated in third place in the preliminary round. Moses completed two of the three preliminary round matches and recorded one assist.

Since 2012 he has been part of the Nigerian national team , with which he participated in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and won the Africa Cup in 2013.
