Whitgift School is an independent day school for around 1200 boys between the ages of 10 and 18 in parkland in the London borough of South Croydon .
History and territory
The school was founded in 1596 by Archbishop of Canterbury John Whitgift and is part of the Whitgift Foundation with Trinity School of John Whitgift and Old Palace School of John Whitgift .
In 1931 the school moved to its present location in Haling Park, the former home of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham , Lord High Admiral of the Fleet against the Spanish Armada . A model of the HMS Ark Royal clearly visible on the top of the "big school" (the assembly hall) is a reminder of the history of the place. Additions since the 400th anniversary of the school include a maze in the founder's garden, a bird house, an enclosure for red squirrels, lakes and a sports facility.
Whitgift is famous in the area for its wide variety of animals, most notably the peacocks, which have graced the grounds since the 1930s. In 2005 David Attenborough attended the school to open the lakes, which are also surrounded by two albino wallabies (a gift from the Queen when the lakes reopened in 2002) and various waterfowl, including Hawaiian geese , which the Zoo has successfully bred.

The International Baccalaureate has been offered at Whitgift since 2005 as an alternative to the A-Levels for the sixth grade.
