Coat of arms of Saint Pierre and Miquelon

The coat of arms of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon , a French overseas territory, shows: underneath of red, in it a silver cross covering a green St. Andrew's cross , ermine and red, in it two golden leopards as stakes , two split shield heads, in blue on (silver?) Waves a three-masted sailing ship with billowing sails, a pennant on each masthead, a flag waving at the stern, all gold.

The first field of the shield head corresponds to the flag of the Basque Country , the middle one to the coat of arms of Brittany , the third to the coat of arms of Normandy , regions of France from which settlers came to St. Pierre and Miquelon.

As a top coat of arms a gold naval crown , the shield rests on two black, schrage looking crossed anchors under the shield of a silver ribbon with the motto "A MARE LABORATORY".

The - Latin - motto supposedly means "From the sea the work", thus roughly: "The sea gives us our livelihood". However, it should read "mari" (ablative) and not "mare" (accusative)
