Heraldic shield Quetzal, rifles, sabers
Motto (motto) LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821

The coat of arms of the Republic of Guatemala is only a sovereign symbol in the heraldic sense, as the shield that defines the coat of arms is not present. Many revisions resulted in the current form.

description

A quetzal sits on two crossed rifles with fixed bayonets and gold-tipped silver sabers , in front of whom is written LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821 ( spa. , "Freedom 15 September 1821 ") on a scroll in red capital letters . Green laurel branches surround the symbol.

symbolism

The quetzal , whose long tail feathers were used to make the headdress of the Mayan chiefs, is the heraldic bird. The 15. September 1821 is considered the day of the independence of Guatemala. Green laurel branches , the guns and sabers are symbols of the struggle for independence.

The coat of arms can also be found in the flag of Guatemala .
