Panama coat of arms

The Panama coat of arms was introduced in 1904.

description

The coat of arms is divided twice and white and red at the top and blue and white at the bottom.

  1. The crossed arms in the white field are reminiscent of the violent separation of Colombia and Spain .
  2. In the red field at the back, the hoe and spade remind of the work during the construction of the Panama Canal .
  3. In the large central field the canal is shown with the rising freedom sun and moon .
  4. A golden cornucopia is shown in the blue field at the bottom , which is supposed to symbolize wealth.
  5. In the white field at the bottom at the back there is a golden impeller for traffic in the country.

On the coat of arms sits the harpy , the official national bird of Panama. In her beak she holds a silver ribbon with the Latin state motto , which refers to the benefits of the Panama Canal for the whole world:

" Pro Mundi Beneficio "
( For the prosperity of the world )

Since 1946 ten stars hover over the harpy eagle, which stand for the ten provinces of Panama .

The coat of arms is framed by four Panamanian national flags to the right and left .

history

The coat of arms of Panama has hardly changed since independence. Only the number of stars has changed from nine to ten. The current form is anchored in the 1946 constitution.
