Nicaraguan coat of arms

The coat of arms of Nicaragua

The state emblem serves as the coat of arms of Nicaragua : a green mountain range of five volcanoes is located in a golden triangle and lies between two blue seas. A red Phrygian cap , which is surrounded by a silver halo, hovers over the mountains against a light blue sky . A rainbow in the colors green, blue, yellow and red swings over the hat . The triangle is surrounded by the lettering República de Nicaragua (above) and América Central (below).

The design of the volcano chain and the rainbow varies, the surrounding lettering can be found in gold and blue letters.

The coat of arms goes back to the emblem of the Central American Confederation , which already contained all of today's motifs. When Nicaragua left the federation, it continued to use the emblem, but in 1854 a decision was made for a version with only one volcano, above which a ring with the inscription Libertad, Orden, Trabajo (“Freedom, Order, Work”) hovers. On September 5, 1908, the original emblem was reintroduced by decree and the lettering América Central was added. The current version was established in 1971. It is also depicted on the flag of Nicaragua , distinguishing it from the flags of Honduras and El Salvador .

The equilateral triangle is a symbol of equality . The five volcanoes represent the five Central American states of the Confederation, the two seas are the Atlantic and the Pacific , which surround Central America. The Phrygian cap was the headgear of the Jacobins during the French Revolution and became a symbol of freedom and independence, especially in Latin America. The rainbow is a symbol of peace.

The coat of arms of El Salvador is still very similar to the Nicaraguan one, the modern coats of arms of the other former members of the Central American Confederation take up similar motifs. The Jacobin hat is still part of the coats of arms of Argentina , Colombia and West Virginia as well as the flags of Paraguay , Haiti , the US states of New York and New Jersey and the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina .
