meaning

Waving national flag

The two blue bars symbolize the Pacific and the Atlantic , the two seas on which Honduras is located.

As an expression of hope for a new federation of Central American states, five blue stars were placed in the white median in 1866, which stand for the former members of the Central American Confederation . The middle star stands for Honduras itself, as it is the central state of Central America.

history

The flag of Honduras is based on the blue, white and blue flag of the Central American Federation. Honduras left this alliance in 1838, but like the other former member states ( El Salvador , Nicaragua , Guatemala , Costa Rica ) stuck to these colors.

As a member of the Central American Confederation, Honduras had been using the flag of the confederation since August 21, 1823. On October 3, 1825, the first national coat of arms of Honduras - very similar to today's - was created. However, it is unknown whether this was also shown on the flag. When the Confederation was dissolved in 1839, Honduras continued to use its flag; In this case, too, it is not known whether this was provided with its own national coat of arms. On February 16, 1866, a law for the first independent national flag was passed. In this, five five-pointed blue stars were set as symbols in the middle white stripe. Since the position of the stars was not precisely described (this only happened in a law from 1949), different models were apparently used. There are older images that show the stars with the point downwards or arranged in a semicircle. From November 1, 1898 to November 30, 1898, Honduras used the flag of this short-lived confederation as a member of the "Greater Central American Republic" founded in 1895. Since the stars were shown in gold in this flag, many flags in Honduras after 1898 with gold-colored stars were apparently produced and used that way. A decree was passed on September 27, 1933 containing an illustration as a template for the national flag . It was not until January 18, 1949 that all dimensions and the color of the flag were precisely regulated with exact specifications.
