The flag of the Turks and Caicos Islands , like many flags of the British overseas territories, is based on the Blue Ensign and thus indicates the dependence on Great Britain .
The emblem of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the flight section of the flag shows the shell of a pteropod , a lobster and a cactus on an ocher-yellow shield .
The flag was officially adopted on November 7, 1968. Previously, a Blue Ensign with the colony's old badge had been in use since the 19th century . The circular badge showed a coastal scene with a sailing ship and a saltworker.
