The national flag is divided vertically into three stripes; a narrow blue stripe on the leech , a narrow green stripe on the receding end and a wide yellow stripe in the middle. The stripes are 1: 2: 1. On the yellow stripe, three green diamonds are arranged in the shape of a V for St. Vincent , symbolizing the island's nickname - gemstones of the Antilles . Blue stands for the sky and the sea, golden yellow symbolizes the warm and cheerful spirit of the population and the golden sand of the Grenadines. Green represents the lush vegetation, St. Vincent's agriculture and the ongoing vitality of the population.

Both the flag's 2: 3 aspect ratio and the use of this one flag for all national sovereignty duties is rather unusual for a former British colony and member of the Commonwealth .

history

When the country became an Associated State on October 27, 1975 , the previous British colonial flag was retained as the national flag. The Blue Ensign with the round emblem, which shows two women and the motto Pax et justitia , corresponded to the design of many other British possessions and former colonies.

For independence on October 27, 1979, a flag was adopted that showed the former colonial emblem of the islands on a stylized leaf of a breadfruit tree . The flag had vertical blue, yellow and green stripes with narrow white dividing strips between them. After a change of government, the white dividing strips were removed in March 1985. Since this flag was not well received by the population, it was decided to design a new flag. However, a national competition did not produce a suitable variant, which is why the government entrusted a Swiss designer with the task. This created today's flag.

Other flags of the country

The governor general, who represents the British monarch as head of state in the country, wears a crown with the British lion and a banner with the country's name on a blue background.

The island of Bequia uses an unofficial flag with a black whale on a white background. Here had Whaling a long tradition, which was still in operation until the 21st century.
