description
The colors are interpreted as follows:
- The red border stands for harmony and unity and indicates the courage that was necessary to achieve independence.
- Yellow stands for the sun and the friendliness of the inhabitants and at the same time for wisdom.
- Green expresses the fertility of agriculture, the country's economic base.
In the left green triangle there is a nutmeg , the country's most important export good.
history
Before independence was achieved between 1967 and 1974, a blue-yellow-green horizontal tricolor with an emblem was used as the flag of the associated area. Between 1875 and 1974 there were also two Blue Ensign colonial flags (one until 1903, the other after) with a seal in the flight section.
