history
Until 1967 , the United Kingdom's Union Jack was the only flag of Anguilla. The 1967 revolution brought forth a new flag depicting two water mermaids with a shell between them. This flag was brought by a group of Anguillans living in San Francisco and was first hoisted when the old flag was destroyed. However, it was not accepted and was soon replaced by the flag of the “Three Dolphins”, which was immediately widely adopted and is still used today by the islanders, although it is not official.
The three orange-colored dolphins represent endurance, unity and stability and are arranged in a circle as a symbol of continuity. The flag has a white background that represents peace and tranquility, with a turquoise stripe at the bottom that symbolizes both the surrounding sea and faith, youth and hope.
The three dolphins flag was used for many years, but it was felt that Anguilla needed its own official flag. Brian Canty, former Governor of Anguilla, proposed a new flag and made some sketches that were sent to Queen Elizabeth II in London for approval .
The new flag, hoisted for the first time on May 30, 1990 , shows a Union Jack on a blue background , in the upper left corner and on the right side a sign in which three orange dolphins can be seen on a white background with a turquoise base. The design thus combines the affiliation to the United Kingdom and the three dolphins flag of Anguilla.
governor
The governor's official flag features the Union Jack and the Anguilla coat of arms, surrounded by a laurel wreath . It is hoisted when the governor is at his official residence, as well as on cars and ships the governor uses to make official visits.
