The flag of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands was introduced on October 3, 1985 when the Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands was formed. It is placed on the major government buildings in South Georgia and on the scientific bases of the British Antarctic Survey .
description
The Flag of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in Gösch and the Coat of arms of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the fly.
history
On the first version of the flag, introduced in 1985, the coat of arms was smaller and shown in a white circle, the current version of the flag was adopted between 1999 and 2002.
? Blue Ensign, until about 1999
Other flags of the territory
The Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has its own flag in the form of the Union Jack with the coat of arms of the territory. Since the civil commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is also the governor of the Falkland Islands, the civil commissioner's flag is only used when he is in the territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. In the original version of this flag, only the coat of arms was shown instead of the coat of arms. Blue Ensigns with the coat of arms instead of the coat of arms have also been handed down, but their origin and use are uncertain.
Argentina lays claim to the islands and sees them as part of its Tierra del Fuego province .
? Union Jack of the Commissioner, until about 1999
